As someone with a chronic medical condition which fluctuates unpredictably (systemic lupus Erythematosus) I notice government and organisations struggle to understand and support medical conditions and their impacts. Invisible conditions are largely dismissed. Accommodations that I require include non-fluorescent lighting, which seems harder than wheelchair accessibility and accommodating people with low vision in the workforce.
I also have unpredictable fatigue and cognitive dysfunction. Government systems struggle with conditions that are not predictable, permanent, consistent across people.
The struggle and stress of explaining the job agencies specific needs is heart wrenching. I’ve studied at uni, I’ve lived with the condition for 15+ years. I know hat I can and cannot do. Stress exacerbates the condition and jumping through government system hoops makes me and others sick.
