The current DES model fails for people with a disability through the lack of allocated resources, 1:1 support and a lack of incentive for the DES providers to have people with a disability successfully removed from their list and placed into mainstream employment.

People with a disability are often provided with little to no realistic or suitable employment options and until better outcomes are provided for people with a disability in Australia, increased incentives need to be provided to employers who take on PWD such as greater wage subsidies and retention bonuses.

The support to find and maintain employment that is supposed to be offered by DES is rarely provided to PWD, a greater focus should be placed on capacity building, on-site support and increasing connections with employers.

Australia is far behind other countries when it comes to employment outcomes for PWD. Until equity is reached, increased focus and incentives for businesses are required.
