I am the parent of a dependant adult with autism who just turned 18. My daughter struggled with school and has not been able to complete yr 12 due to her severe social anxiety and selective mutism / withdrawal syndrome. Getting NDIS funding with such subjective conditions that are poorly understood means limited access to supports for employment and skills building that are suitable for her situation and that don’t involve her having to challenge her social anxieties which is difficult for her. An employment support program that understands the complexities of people with her condition and aims to work with her and her supports to build an individualised program to assist them to find ways to participate in society in a productive and positive way is needed.
