Which priority group of the Try, Test and Learn Fund does your idea support?
Young carers, Young parents, Young students at risk of long-term unemployment

What need or issue are you trying to address?
‘Bike Me’ addresses the issues which can prevent or discourage young people from applying for traineeships and apprenticeships, while also helping to address the issue of them not selecting the field of work which is right for them in the first instance, thus reducing drop-out rates.

What is your idea?
Bikes are one of the items most frequently finding their way to a tip shop. Up-cycling of these bikes gives young people an opportunity to learn and earn, prepare themselves for entry into a traineeship or apprenticeship, be mentored in a constructive environment by strong role-models, and gain other skills, in particular, how to promote themselves to potential employees. ‘Bike Me’ will re-purpose these bikes in innovative and creative ways – from CBD bikes that can be pedaled to charge phones, to making bikes which can be used as pop-up micro business shops, to outdoor gyms, and even bikes placed in front of murals to create quirky photo opportunities – anyone for mountain biking on Mars? Many of the materials required for these bike makeovers can also be sourced at the tip shop.
