Privacy Collection Notice for privacy consultation on the National Disability Data Asset
Your personal information is protected by law, including under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (the Privacy Act).
This privacy collection notice is designed to ensure you are aware of certain matters in relation to the Department of Social Service’s (the Department) collection of your personal information, as required by the Privacy Act.
What is the purpose of this Consultation?
The National Disability Data Asset (NDDA) team from the Department in partnership the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) are leading targeted consultations with the disability community, primarily through Disability Representative Organisations and their members.
The purpose of the consultation is to provide information and seek feedback from the disability community on privacy arrangements for the National Disability Data Asset and its underlying infrastructure (Consultation).
The disability data asset will improve the lives and outcomes for people with disability by connecting information to better understand their life experiences.
What is ‘personal information’ and ‘sensitive information’?
Personal information is information or an opinion about an identified individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable.
Sensitive information is a subset of personal information. It includes information or an opinion about your racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious beliefs or affiliations, philosophical beliefs, membership of associations or unions, sexual orientation or practices, criminal record, or health, genetic or biometric information.
What personal information we collect
Through your participation in the Consultation, we will collect a range of information. If you can be reasonably identified, this will be your personal information (and some of which could be sensitive information) including:
- your name
- email address
- phone number
- the organisation that referred you to the Consultation
- notes from what you say or the information you provide in the Consultation
- postal address (if applicable for payment for attendance)
- name and email address of your support person (if applicable)
- if language translations, braille materials or other accessibility aides are required to participate (if applicable).
How we collect your personal information
Your personal information relating to your personal views will be collected if you choose to participate in the Consultation. We will do this by:
- collecting information when you register using the registration form for the consultation sessions on DSS Engage, and
- collecting information from you directly through your participation in the Consultation. This means that we will collect your personal information, including notes from what you say during the meeting.
Why we collect your personal information
Your personal information is being collected for the purpose of:
- registration to attend the Consultation
- informing the development of a Privacy Impact Assessment for the project
- collation of the information provided including through notes taken in the Consultation
- payment for attendance at the Consultation (where applicable), and
- involving you in other future disability data asset consultation sessions on ethics and data products.
If you do not provide your personal information (including sensitive information) we may not be able to contact you to attend the privacy consultation sessions or provide you with the necessary supports to ensure the Consultations are accessible according to your needs.
Who we disclose your personal information to
Any personal information or sensitive information collected from this consultation process is only accessible to you and staff involved in the relevant consultation process (specifically from the Department and ABS).
If you provide the name of your organisation and/or the name of the organisation that referred you to the consultation, this information will be disclosed to Maddocks for the purpose of summarising broad participant background through the consultation report. Name, email address and phone number will not be included in the privacy consultation report.
We will not provide your personal information to anybody else unless required by law. We will not disclose your personal information to anybody overseas.
