Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Advisory Council – Expressions of Interest – Privacy Collection Notice
The Department of Social Services (department, we, us), collects personal information, including sensitive information, about individuals for a range of purposes to enable it to carry out its functions.
The Department is currently seeking expressions of interest (EOI) for the Family Domestic and Sexual Violence Advisory Council (the Council). This notice is designed to ensure you are aware of the purpose and certain matters in relation to that collection, as required by the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (the Privacy Act).
What is ‘personal information’ and ‘sensitive information’?
Your ‘personal information’ is protected by law, including under the Privacy Act. Personal information is information or an opinion about an identifiable individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable.
‘Sensitive information’ is a subset of personal information and can include information or an opinion about a person’s health or genetic information, racial or ethnic origin, criminal history, religious beliefs, and membership of trade unions or associations.
Why we collect your personal information
Through this form, we will collect personal information about you to assist in the effective management of your EOI, and for the purposes of appointing members to the Council. We request that you only disclose personal information that is being solicited.
What we collect
Through your participation in the EOI process, we will collect a range of your personal information (some of which could be sensitive information) including:
- first and last name
- date of birth
- mobile phone number
- email address
- state / territory of residence
- employment details
- sexual orientation
- racial and ethnic origin
- criminal record
- membership of a professional or trade association, or trade union membership or associations
- working with vulnerable people (WWVP) check
How we collect your information
Your personal information will be collected if you choose to submit this EOI form, via the DSS Engage website (DSS Engage).

Who we disclose your personal information to
Personal information collected through DSS Engage will be disclosed to relevant staff members of the Department involved in the processing and progression of the EOI, including members of the selection panel.
This selection panel will be comprised of Departmental staff, as well as staff of the Office for Women (the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet). EOIs will be assessed and shortlisted by the selection panel and provided to the Minister for Social Services for final review.
The Department may also disclose your personal (and sensitive information) to the following people, organisations or third parties:
- our ICT Contracted Service Provider, for the purposes of assisting the Department with information technology services,
- other parties where the disclosure is required or authorised by law,
- other staff for training purposes.
Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in analysis of EOI submissions – OPT OUT
Unless you elect to opt out when providing your submission for the EOI, the Department intends to use AI to assist with reviewing your submission.
The use of AI will help the Department to efficiently and effectively summarise and analyse the responses received. At this stage, the Department intends to utilise Microsoft Copilot to process submissions of individuals that do not opt out of AI processing.

You can opt out of the Department using AI in relation to your submission when you provide your submission by selecting ‘No, I do not want AI to be used to analyse my submission’ on the DSS Engage platform, or when you email us your submission by completing the email coversheet.
Storage
The Department will ensure that storage of your personal information is done so in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles. Storage of personal information (and the disposal of information when no longer required) is managed in accordance with the Australian Government records management regime, including the Archives Act 1983, agency-specific records authorities and general records authorities. This ensures your personal information is held securely by the Department.
Personal information received by the Department will be stored on Services Australia’s cloud storage, on servers located in Australia. Services Australia and the Department retain effective control over any personal information held on our cloud, and the information is handled in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles.
Any information disclosed to third parties will be handled in accordance with the Privacy Act and stored in accordance with agreed security protocols.
Confirmation and consent
By providing personal and sensitive information as part of your EOI, you consent to our collection of personal information. You also consent to the Department’s use and handling of your personal information. More information about the handling of your personal information is set out in the Department’s Privacy Policy.
You do not need to provide your consent, and you can change your mind at any time. However, if you choose not to provide some or all of this information this will impact our ability to assess your application for a position on the Council. This may mean you will not be considered for a position.
You should promptly notify us if the personal details you have provided in the form have become out of date, and you wish to correct this personal information.
