Consultation on the Intercountry Adoption Family Support Service – Summary of consultations

The Department of Social Services (DSS) would like to thank everyone who contributed to the consultations on the Intercountry Adoption Family Support Service (ICAFSS), whether through the online submissions, workshops, phone interviews or small group sessions.

Two summaries of the key themes that emerged from the ICAFSS consultations, held over February and March 2020, are available below:

  • Summary of the ICAFSS Online Submissions to DSS Engage, June 2020. This paper was written by DSS and contains the key themes of the online submissions that were provided in response to the Discussion Paper.
  • Capturing the Voices of the Intercountry Adoption Community in the Redesign of the Intercountry Adoption Family Support Services, June 2020. This paper was written by independent facilitator, Ian Watson, from Gilimbaa and details the key themes that were captured in the workshops, phone interviews and small group consultations.

Throughout the consultations three key observations emerged, reflecting the views shared by young and adult adoptees, adoptive parents, advocacy groups, service providers and academics. They included that:

  1. 1. Therapeutic care must continue to be a core component of the ICAFSS.
  2. 2. Capacity building, involving the participation and input of people with lived experience, is critical to supporting more holistic support across people’s lifetime.
  3. 3. Promotion and awareness of the ICAFSS will result in greater service access and reach.
